Off-base housing near San Antonio's military installations is competitive. Rental prices in neighborhoods adjacent to Lackland and Fort Sam Houston have climbed steadily, and in many cases your BAH covers the rent but leaves little room for anything else. Families who PCS into San Antonio and start their search there sometimes find themselves choosing between location and budget.
Lytle and Pleasanton offer a different equation. Both are real towns with schools, grocery stores, and medical access — not just a highway exit — and both sit at a distance from the city that's genuinely commutable for most assignments. The result is more house for your BAH, without the tradeoffs people assume come with living outside the city.

All four JBSA installations and Camp Bullis are reachable from Lytle and Pleasanton on interstate or US highway the entire way. Times below reflect typical off-peak weekday conditions; add 10–15 minutes for morning gate traffic at busy installations.

Lackland-assigned service members get the best of both options — Lytle's I-35 approach keeps the drive under 30 minutes most mornings. Fort Sam and Randolph assignments are manageable from either town but require more planning around commute timing.
How BAH Works Here
BAH is calculated for the duty station zip code, not your home address — so if you're assigned to any JBSA installation, you receive San Antonio-area BAH regardless of whether you rent in the city or in Lytle or Pleasanton. That means you get the full San Antonio rate while paying South Texas rental prices.
For current BAH rates by rank and dependency status, the official source is BAH on the DOD Travel website. Rates are updated each January. Most EWG Properties units fall well within BAH for E-4 and above with dependents, and the gap between your BAH and your rent is yours to keep.

Lytle vs. Pleasanton: Which Fits Your Assignment?
The right town depends almost entirely on which installation you're assigned to:
- Lackland (JBSA) assignment: Lytle is the clear pick. I-35 to US-90 is a straightforward 28-mile run, and the commute is predictable.
- Fort Sam Houston assignment: Either town works. Lytle's I-35 approach is slightly more direct; Pleasanton's US-281 is an easy highway drive. The difference is roughly 5 minutes.
- Randolph (JBSA) assignment: Both towns are similar in drive time to Universal City. Factor in which town better fits your family's other priorities — schools, available unit size, proximity to medical.
- Camp Bullis assignment: Lytle is notably more convenient via US-90 and the northwest loop approach. Pleasanton's commute to Camp Bullis involves crossing more of the city.
Practical PCS Planning Notes
A few things specific to relocating to this area as a service member:
- Income verification: We accept LES (Leave and Earnings Statement) in place of pay stubs for income verification. No additional documentation is required beyond what you'd provide on a standard rental application.
